Where the gap is real

Small, unbranded goods. Phone cases, kitchen gadgets, storage organizers, cheap tools — this is where Temu’s factory-direct model actually shows up in the receipt. No brand markup, no distributor layer, no retail floor space cost baked in.

Countries with high local retail margins. Spain and Italy’s general retailers (El Corte Inglés, Mediaworld) carry higher overhead than lean e-commerce-first competitors like Bol.com in the Netherlands, so the discount versus Temu reads wider there.

Where the gap shrinks

Branded electronics. A named-brand headphone or charger sold on Temu isn’t meaningfully cheaper than the same SKU on Amazon or MediaMarkt once you account for warranty support and return convenience — sometimes it’s a different (unbranded) product entirely, not the same item at a discount.

After VAT and shipping thresholds. Italy’s 22% IVA and Spain’s 21% IVA are the highest of the six markets we track — an order that dodges the free-shipping threshold can lose a chunk of its price edge to shipping cost alone.
